What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy is defined by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) as:
“The therapeutic use of work, self-care, and play activities to increase development and prevent disability. It may include adaptation of tasks or the environment to achieve maximum independence and to enhance the quality of life.”
When illness, injury or disability prevents a person from effectively or independently functioning in any area of his/her life, then it is our job as an Occupational Therapist to provide treatment which will help a person regain function, maintain level of functioning, or make accommodations for any deficits they may be experiencing.
We as Occupational Therapists evaluate our client’s functional capacities, as well as their physical, cognitive, social and developmental defects or deficits which negatively influence the achievement of their optimal performance.
We work together with and are essential members of the health care team. We work with medical and other allied medical personnel to help our clients overcome dysfunction, maximize their potential, maintain their quality of life and return to the community as contributing members.
